Scotty claims one of our randomized prompts (we cycle through many) is offensive. The prompt in full reads:

"Your Mom Is So Fat She Doesn't Fit In This Textbox"

Scotty believes this is offensive and may not appeal to VCs and other professionals. His opinion is shared by cybercerberus.

Cambrian House staff maintain that the text is so humerous that its possible inappropriateness is rendered insignificant.

Surprise server switch

Early in 2007, we were asked to take over and re-create a client’s website. Their existing website was already hosted with iPowerWeb. Our job was to create a new site to replace the old one, but keep it under the existing domain and hosting provider.

We took over the account from the previous website administrator, and began work. After months of planning and offline design work, we were ready to build the site online.

We used WordPress technology as the framework for the site. The templates and the database for a WordPress website work only when the site is online. This means that besides our design mock-ups and textual content, we did not have an offline backup of the actual website.

Our contract web developer spent two days building the site online. The site was complete on Friday, May 11, and viewable to the public online.

By Monday, May 14, our brand new site had disappeared, and was mysteriously replaced with the old version. Additionally, we were unable to log in to administration panel for the website, and unable to access the site via FTP.

I got in touch with iPowerWeb’s tech support, and they restored access. Upon logging in, it was clear that even the back-end data files had disappeared.

On May 17, I got in touch with iPowerWeb’s tech support to ask about our missing files. I was told that they were performing a server migration, and that “once the migration is completed then all the files and database will be migrated to the new servers.” (See attached screenshot of the conversation in which this took place, as well as an email from me to our client.) We were also told that there was no exact ETA for when this migration would be complete.

On May 21, I received this response: “The last backup of your site in old server we have is dated on May 10 2007 and is not possible to recover the data on may 11th.”

All of our data had been lost.

We immediately decided to switch hosting providers. Our web developer spent the following week redoing all his work. The site was eventually reconstructed (on a new server). The website launch was delayed by three weeks, and we were forced to explain to our client that their website had been somehow “lost.” All parties felt disappointed and let down.

Elbowroom Design would like iPowerWeb to provide $300 in compensation for the time spent duplicating work already rendered by our web developer.

Website sabotage!

We hired Mark to work on a website for a local church, called "The Smothering Place." Mark agreed to, and we signed a contract. When we finished the website, we noticed that Mark had secretly replaced portions of the source code, as well as portions of the website content, with extremely bizarre words. Now, this church website has swear words and nonsense language all over it! I have no idea how to fix it because I never use the Internet, Mark is refusing to return my emails, and the church congregation is very upset. I want Mark to fix the site, and refund us ALL the money we paid him to make this website!

I attached an example: this is a screenshot I took of the website. I circled SOME of the crazy language he used, but there's even more that I didn't circle. What is this? Why did he do it?

Second chance shed

I own land in Second Life and wanted to put a shed in the backyard. Although my 3-D rendering skills are good enough to get it done myself, I just didn’t have the time because my RL kids are so involved in soccer. I hired another person to build the shed for me but he built it a lot smaller than we agreed upon. He refused to fix it and denies that we agreed on what we agreed upon. What do you think I should do?

Change of Address

I was renting a house that is slated for demolition in three months. I have moved out and nobody is living in my old place. There were cigarette burns on the carpet and my landlord told me he was going to keep my damage deposit. I don’t think this is fair because the building is going to be torn down. I would like my $1500 damage deposit back.

New Jersey Niet!

I bought New Jersey Nets tickets from Vince on Craigslist because I was going to be in New Jersey in a week and a half on business. I paid him $25 in express shipping and waited for the tickets. Vince sent the tickets regular mail instead and so not only did I pay too much, I didn’t get the tickets in time and had to leave without them. Luckily, I had my neighbor check the mail and she sent the tickets to me in New Jersey. They arrived the day of the game. Unfortunately, it cost me $45 in postage to get them there overnight. I would like my postage costs refunded by Vince. It wasn’t right for him to send them regular mail when I paid express.

Break-up Decisions

I had been living with my ex-boyfriend for six years. Recently we broke up because he had an affair with my friend. The night I found out, I moved back with my parents and he’s still living at our apartment.

As you might imagine, I don’t have any interest in talking to him anymore. However, it’s important that I get my belongings back. Right now he has everything at our place and I’m not sure what he intends on keeping or if he intends on staying.

I would like my stuff back, including my dog, and preferably I would like to continue living at our place, because it was his stupidity that screwed everything up. Thanks.
